Friend Fridays: Label makers
For this week’s Fashion Beauty Friend Friday, we’re talking about labeling and whether and why it can be detrimental.
1. As a someone who writes/blogs about fashion, have you placed yourself into some sort of blogging category?
I don’t know that I’ve put myself in a blogging category as much as I’ve tried to create a blogging identity, one that’s targeted to a specific audience and niche. I’m a 41-year-old working mom who thinks that fashion is attainable, no matter how busy your schedule or how tiny your budget, and whatever your body shape may be. I write for other women just like me.
2. What keeps you from or encourages you to label yourself as a certain kind of blogger?
I try to focus on my audience because I want them to feel like I’m on their side–to establish some rapport. I’m writing about them and for them.
3. When picking blogs to read and follow, are you drawn to ones that indicate a certain group or way of thinking/being?
The blogs I read tend to fall into one of two categories: original voices, usually fantastic writers, whether funny or serious; and relevant subject matter, from fashion to pop culture to parenting. My favorite blogs are both.
4. Do you think there are benefits in labeling yourself or others?
Only inasmuch as it can create a common connection with another person: “I’m a geek, too!”
5. Agree or disagree: We’re all just people; we don’t need all the labels.
Agree. Everyone is a collection of interests, experiences, behaviors, ideas and habits. Labels can describe parts of who we are, but never our entire selves.
I’m a style and fashion advice blogger. I’m a mom. I’m a black belt in tae kwon do. I’m a wife. I’m a friend. I’m a director of marketing. I’m a geek. I’m a pop culture lover.
Who are you?
