5 ways to edit your wardrobe now

This messy closet clearly needs a wardrobe edit

This messy closet clearly needs a wardrobe edit.

Read any style advice book or blog (why, you’re reading one right now), particularly the advice focusing on style makeovers, and one of the first steps we’ll recommend is editing your wardrobe.

And by “editing,” we mean “getting rid of stuff”–clothes you either don’t wear or shouldn’t be wearing.

(For an extreme example, think of any episode of “What Not To Wear”; right at the beginning, Stacy and Clinton take their style-challenged client’s entire wardrobe and throw it in a trash can. Now that’s editing.)

So how do you edit your wardrobe, anyway? There are a variety of ways to go about it, and here are some of my favorites.

My 5 favorite posts of wardrobe editing advice

Regardless of the method you employ, the most important part is setting aside the time and just doing it.

Well, that and a nice glass of Riesling to go with it. (Maybe that’s just me!)

Your turn

  • That’s some of my advice (so far) about wardrobe editing. What’s your favorite approach?

I’ve been doing a lot of this lately. i just got rid of a large bag of summer clothes that I’ve been hanging on to. Need to go thru my fall and winter. Unfortunately, I’ve gained some weight lately and I fear that many of my clothes won’t fit anymore.

Seasonal transitions are a great time to rethink what’s in your closet. I’ll be reluctantly pulling out my colder weather clothes this weekend and I expect to shed a few things!

Wine is HUGELY necessary! I do this about every 6 months, and I’m helping a few friends do it right now. It will be interesting to do it not in my own closet.

Yes! I did some MAJOR editing (from two closets to two and a half suitcases) about eight months ago and I feel the need to do it again. I’m intrigued by the ten items thing….

Good post. I thought I was organised as I pack away my clothes twice a year but now I realise my wardrobe could do with major editing. Am bookmarking this post for future reference!
