How to make 3 different level outfits with one blazer (part 1)

Level 2/Weekend Casual outfit: Brown Calvin Klein blazer, V-neck sweater, Habitual jeans, Pencey leopard booties

A really great-fitting blazer is one of the most versatile pieces you can own in your wardrobe. Dress it up, dress it down; you always look just a little better when you put one on.

This week I’m starting a 3-part outfit photo series to show you how you can use a blazer to make Working Mom Outfits in 3 of the 5 levels, from a Level 2/Weekend Chic all the way to Level 4/Client Meeting.

Today it’s Level 2, and this one takes the least amount of fuss. Since it’s the weekend, you know we’re wearing denim! I struck a balance between super casual and dressy by wearing my lighter wash Habitual jeans.

I could’ve worn a T-shirt under the blazer, but since it’s winter I opted for a simple V-neck sweater.

For fun, I spiced the outfit up a little bit with my leopard print booties. To keep the jewelry at a Level 2, I wore a handmade knit choker a friend bought for me at a craft show a zillion years ago.

And if I wanted to go Level 1/Weekend Casual, all I’d have to do is replace the blazer with a soft button-front shirt or tan hoodie.

Goes to show how much this one piece elevates the level of an outfit, doesn’t it?

Blazer: Calvin Klein (similar, on sale for $180, Ann Taylor).
Sweater: Banana Republic (similar, $30, Kohls).
Jeans: Habitual (similar, $195, Nordstrom).
Boots: Pencey Melun (was $275, on sale for $123, Neiman Marcus).
Necklace: Handmade (similar, $18, Etsy).
Outfit level: 2

What to wear for the ultimate Date Night, Valentine’s Day

What to wear for the ultimate Date Night: Valentine's Day

Whether you’re dining at the chicest chef’s outpost or simply adding candles and flowers to your own dining room table, the biggest Date Night of the year, otherwise known as Valentine’s Day, is just around the corner.

What’s a chic mom to wear?

Here are some ways you can spice up your Valentine’s Day with an outfit (and an evening) that’s truly a Level 5.

  • If you’re going out straight from work. Obviously you can’t spend a day at the office in your LBD. Or can you? Unless it’s cut too high or cut too low (and if it’s both, it’s a bit too much for dinner anyway), make it work friendly by topping it with a fitted blazer or even a belted, beaded cardigan. Wear a strand of pearls and you can keep them on all day. Take off the topper and swap your pumps for strappy heels, and you are Level 5, lady.
  • If you’re leaving after the babysitter arrives. Unless your kids are older, you might have to dodge sweet and sticky little fingers up until the moment of your escape, so the LBD is a little less practical. Think sexy top (sequins, low cut, velvet, whatever you’ve got!),  pencil skirt and your blingiest, shiniest necklace. Save the skirt for the last minute, or put a robe over everything, until you hear that doorbell.
  • If you’re having your romantic dinner at home. Who says you have to save Level 5 for going out? This is still Date Night, my friend. Sure, you can slip those high heels off whenever you’d like (and you should be taking them off eventually, wink wink), but why save your best dress for a night out?

No matter which scenario is yours, you’re not necessarily limited to a dress or a skirt. Your main goal is to feel fabulous, so wear what you know looks fantastic on you, whether it’s a pair of well-cut trousers or skinny jeans, and include a little skin and a little shine.

Add perfume and heels (how high you can tolerate is between you and your feet–or possibly your podiatrist) and you’re done.

Outfit post [Level 4]: One outfit, the second variation

Outfit photo: Denim shirt, tan vest, animal print scarf, brown skirt, brown wedge boots.

Last week’s outfit post was intended to show how you can take an outfit from one level of the 5 Levels of Working Mom Outfits and tweak it slightly to take it to another level.

Outfit photo: Denim shirt, tan vest, animal print scarf, brown skirt, brown wedge boots.I started with a Level 3/Casual Friday outfit (as I would define it for my workplace). This week, I’ve reworked the pieces to make a Level 4/Client Meeting outfit.

Although it looks like the top half is different, the 3 pieces are actually the same. This time, I wore the vest over the denim shirt instead of underneath. This allowed me to button both garments which I thought might give me a more streamlined torso.

I also knotted the scarf slightly differently to make it a little looser.

What makes this outfit a Level 4, however, is the bottom half; I swapped corduroy jeans for a skirt and tights.

I still have on brown boots with 2-inch heels, except this pair are knee high while last week’s were ankle boots. Even so, if it weren’t so cold, I could’ve kept the original pair of boots on and still had a Level 4 outfit.

In other words, just one item made the difference in levels for me. When you wear a skirt, you’re always just a bit dressier, don’t you think?

Turtleneck: Lands End (similar, Three Dots, $55).
Vest: H&M (similar, Coldwater Creek, on sale for $20).
Denim shirt: Old Navy (similar, $78, Zappos).
Skirt: H&M (similar, Jones New York, on sale for $45).
Boots: Aerosoles, Gather Round (on sale, $88, Endless.com).
Scarf: JCPenney (similar, Nine West, $24).
Outfit level: 4

How to figure out what your body shape is

Torso with measuring tape: How to figure out what your body shape isHourglass. Pear. Apple.

You’ve heard these terms before, right? They’re the slightly awkward, and not always flattering, ways we try to describe a woman’s body shape.

Perhaps more accurately, they are an attempt to describe a set of body proportions: the relationship of widths across various points in the body.

Fruit metaphors aside, what’s the point of knowing this information?

It’s to properly dress your body.

And by “properly,” I mean in a way that fits and flatters you.

This is not about looking thinner. Not really. It’s about looking balanced. (Skinny girls can have hips wider than their shoulders, too.)

But before you can read any article or book or blog post about dressing for the “x” body shape, you first need to know what yours is. It starts with a measuring tape.

How to figure out your body shape

Get out that measuring tape, and take and fill in these measurements: bust, waist, hips and shoulders.

(If you need help with this, just Google “how to measure ____” and look for any one of a number of videos demonstrating how to.)

Then translate your measurements into body shape. Here are the most commonly used shapes and their formulas:

Triangle: You’re wider on top than you are below; that is, your shoulder measurement is more than 5 percent larger than your hip measurement. Also called the apple shape.

Pear: Or dewdrop, or inverted triangle—this is the opposite of the triangle, so the proportions are flipped: your hips are more than 5 percent larger than your shoulders.

Rectangle: Aka, the flute. Your shoulder and hips are the same or nearly so, but your waist isn’t much smaller; it’s 25% less at the most.

Hourglass: This one’s easy—your shoulders and hips are the same or very close, and your waist is more than 25% narrower, usually about 10 inches smaller.

Not as tricky as you thought, I hope?

Now when I talk about how to buy and dress the x shape (such as this guide on buying blazers for the pear shape), you’ll know which advice is best for you.

Your turn

  • Did you have the body shape you thought you did?
  • Which body shape metaphors do you prefer (triangle or apple, inverted triangle or pear, etc.)?
  • Or should we come up with less silly names entirely?

Friend Fridays: Trends and inspiration for spring 2012

Today's Fashion Beauty Friend Friday is on the subject of trends; one I plan to include in my wardrobe is Tangerine Tango, the 2012 color of the year (seen here)This week for Fashion Beauty Friend Friday, we’re talking about trends for spring, next fall (!) and beyond.

1. With Fashion week just around the corner, we are all beginning to focus on the upcoming trends for fall. But what about the trends hitting stores now? What are you coveting?

After a bit of a spendy fall, I’ve actually put the brakes on my shopping for the time being. (No spending at all in January, if you can believe that!) So I’ve tried to remain somewhat blissfully ignorant about what’s in the stores at the moment.

But once the groundhog sees his shadow and I catch spring fever again, I think I’ll be working some Tangerine Tango into my wardrobe. It feels fresh and unexpected.

2. How do you incorporate new trends into your wardrobe?

The same way I incorporate any new piece into my wardrobe: I try to look for garments that complement something I already own, replace it or fill a gap.

3. What trend are you seeing and not loving?

There seems to be a lot of heavy use of lace in some of the spring collections, as well as very transparent or sheer tops. I don’t really see myself in either of these trends!

4. Do you feel the pressure to constantly update your closet with the latest trends?

Pressure? No. Temptation? Of course! We all like the shiny new toy, don’t we?

5. Where do you find inspiration that takes the trend and makes it accessible to you and your personal taste?

A little bit of everywhere: fashion magazines, other style bloggers and my own imagination.

 Your turn

  • How would you answer these questions?
